Positioning and Displacement Frame
Positioning is mostly a working hypothesis right now. What is observed, where customers come from, our price floor, and the no-disparagement rule, is solid. The positioning angle built on top, how we frame ourselves and whether we displace or compete, is one open bet for the experiment system to settle. The altitude ladder, segment seams, and voice live in brand.md. Each section carries its status.
Observed (Locked)
Status: Locked (observed facts and a hard voice rule).
- No peer competitor at our scale or style. Where competition exists it is small, single-location, often poorly run. This is a fact about supply. It does not by itself settle whether a given customer feels we compete with the alternative they would otherwise choose (see the bet).
- Where customers come from. Members arrive either from a failing space or from no space at all:
- Apartment or home: neighbors, partner or roommate friction, HOA, can't be loud or keep a kit.
- Garage: neighbor conflict, weather and damp ruin gear, no security or soundproofing.
- Storage unit: practice often not allowed, no power or climate, limited hours, can't really rehearse.
- Friend's basement or shared house: conditional, flaky, not yours; the band loses it when the friend's life changes.
- No space at all: never had anywhere to play. The frame here is having a place for the first time, not replacing a worse one.
- Two more states exist but are not primary targets: DIY warehouse share (thin) and quit-or-not-playing (likely high-churn).
- Pricing anchors: from $285/mo, from $15/hr. See goals-and-kpis.md.
- Voice rule (hard): name a prior state or an alternative plainly, never put it down, and never name or knock a peer studio. From the
mg-voiceskill and brand.md; the "apartment sucks" ad was panned for breaking it.
The positioning bet
Status: Working bet (the bulk of positioning; to experiment, feeds Layer 4).
How we frame ourselves is not settled. It is one bet with a few faces:
- Displace or compete. "We replace inadequate alternatives, we don't compete" is a hypothesis, not a fact. For some mindsets the prior space is partly the point (authenticity, DIY), and a national, polished brand can read as a liability, so for them we do compete, against the local or independent option they prefer.
- Is displacement the right angle. Leading with "your old space failed you" assumes there was a space and that it failed. It does not fit customers coming from no space at all, for whom the frame is having a place for the first time, and for the authenticity mindset it may misfire. The lead may need to be the room being yours, or the scene, or something else per segment.
- National brand: asset or liability, by segment. Unknown and probably segment-dependent. The "rich kids" read is evidence it can cut against us.
- Angle by segment and altitude. The right frame likely differs across the segment seams in brand.md, rather than one frame for all.
Until tested, lead plainly at the base (a real room that works and is yours, at a fair price) and hold the higher-altitude angles lightly.
Gaps
Status: Stub (what we don't know yet).
- Which angle converts, by segment and channel. No data.
- Whether the national brand helps or hurts, by mindset.
- Channel-by-channel and partnership positioning. Deferred to a Layer 3 channel strategy doc (not yet written).
- The storage-unit angle is underwritten and may be high-leverage. Worth deliberate work once the angle question is less open.

Early lines that predate mg-voice v3 and break the no-disparagement rule: "Band practice w/o traumatizing the dog," "Your neighbors will never be the same," "Stay married to that partner you like so much : )," and the panned Cherry City "This sucks" ad ("Salem bands: practicing in your apartment sucks. Cherry City built rooms for this."). The lesson: name the prior state honestly, do not disparage it. "Your apartment wasn't built for a full band setup" is on-voice; "Your apartment sucks" is not. See paid-meta.md lesson 11.
